Chain service intervals when the road is dust

The service book assumes clean air. Here is the interval that actually keeps a chain alive on murram.

A drive chain on dusty roads does not fail from lack of lubricant. It fails from lubricant that has turned into grinding paste. The fix is not more oil, it is a different schedule.

Applies to
Chain drive, all sizes
Clean interval
300 to 500 km on murram
Lube interval
After every clean
Slack check
Weekly, or after load changes
Wear limit
2 percent stretch
Tools
Brush, paraffin, rule

Read the story

Service books are written for clean fuel, sealed roads and mild dust. Adjust the intervals or the bike will adjust them for you, usually at the least convenient point on the route.

Service intervals compared between sealed and unsealed use
ItemTarmac MurramWhy it differs
Chain clean and lube 800 km 300 km Dust turns lubricant into grinding paste. Clean, do not top up.
Engine oil 3000 km 2000 km Heat and low average speed both shorten this. Filter every second change at minimum.
Air filter 6000 km 1500 km The single largest difference between sealed and unsealed use.
Tyre pressure Weekly Weekly Adjust for load, not just for the sticker figure.
Brake pads Inspect 5000 km Inspect 2500 km Grit accelerates pad and disc wear together.
Spark plug 8000 km 6000 km Read it before you replace it. The old plug is a free diagnostic.
Valve clearance 12000 km 10000 km Noise is a late symptom. Measure on the interval rather than waiting to hear it.
Fork oil 20000 km 12000 km Rough surface work is what actually consumes damping performance.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column. These are working intervals for the region, not a substitute for the manufacturer schedule on a machine under warranty.

Half of a phone diagnosis is lost to vocabulary. If you can tell a fundi that the noise is at the swingarm pivot rather than somewhere at the back, you get a useful answer on the first call and you pay for one repair instead of two. The specification block on this drawing is marked as an example, because the numbers that matter are the ones in your own manual.

Entries marked in preparation are planned and drafted but not published. They are listed so the scope of the section is honest rather than to imply a page exists.
